Haptic Based Risk Potential Mediation for Surgery Simulation

Surgical interventions always cause risks to the patients affected by them. Risk estimation techniques enable a preoperative simulation of critical steps within an intervention. Moreover, they provide useful information for consideration of risks in preoperative planning and in surgery itself as well as in medical education and training. In our paper we present a mathematical model for risk estimation in surgical operations. The goal of this work is to determine risks in dependence of single surgical actions and the corresponding consequences for the affected anatomical structures. Special emphasis is drawn to the haptic mediation of the risk values which has been realised using a forcefeedback device of Sensable’s PHANToMTM family. First applications of our risk model in the field of cut trajectory optimisation are presented and future work is outlined at the end of this paper.
